Dr Matthew Kinsella General, Cosmetic & Implant Dentistry

Why do I need a dental crown instead of a filling?

If your tooth is decayed, a dental filling can be ideal for eliminating the cavity and restoring your tooth to health, if the area is small.

However, if your tooth is cracked or sustains more decay than a filling can repair, a dental crown in West Perth may be a better solution to repair your tooth. A crown covers your remaining tooth entirely and closely mimics your natural tooth in both shape and shade.

We typically make dental crowns out of ceramic porcelain, which is not only durable but also aesthetically pleasing since it can be custom-shaded to match your teeth. Your dental crown not only blends flawlessly with your smile, but it also allows you to eat, chew, brush and floss with ease.

The process for completing a crown is relatively straightforward and typically takes around two to three weeks. During your first visit, Dr Kinsella prepares your tooth and sends impressions to our dental laboratory where they will handcraft your crown. At your second visit, we'll permanently place your new tooth so you can get back to eating and smiling again.

We welcome your call to answer any questions you may have about dental fillings, crowns, or what may be best for your smile.

Any surgical or invasive procedure carries risks. Before proceeding, you should seek a second opinion from an appropriately qualified health practitioner.
